Maureen, pictured below with her parents, shared her story in a thank-you letter to Scholarship America in 2008.
"The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund has taken a huge burden off myself and my family. I would like to personally thank anyone involved with this scholarship fund, which has enabled me to continue attending my first choice school. It is an honor to have received this scholarship and I am humbled by the generosity of the organizations that made this scholarship possible. With this scholarship, made possible by funds from the Power of America Fund and the Daimler AG Help the Children Fund, I will not only be able to graduate from college, but my dreams of continuing on to law school seem more of a reality. With my father's dwindling health, certain things are unsure and this scholarship has comforted me in knowing that people still care.
"As time goes on, some people have begun to forget the nightmares of 9/11. My family will never. We will never forget, and we see the lasting effects as it continues to take a toll on my dad's health. I am grateful to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund for its role in helping the people of America through this terrible tragedy. Today, almost seven years after 9/11, it is even more inspiring to know that people still care. The Families of Freedom Scholarship organization sustains the memories of all those lost or suffering due to 9/11. It is so humbling that donors, who are seemingly strangers, can show such kindness and compassion. Scholarship America gives me strength and hope for a better future and hopefully a better world for everyone.

The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund benefits financially needy dependent children, spouses, and domestic partners of 9/11 victims. If you are eligible to receive assistance, you'll need to complete a one-time registration; after that, you will need to submit an application each year.
