September 11 Scholarship Alliance: Specific College Funds


In the aftermath of September 11, a number of U.S. colleges made special scholarship provisions to assist currently enrolled or future students who were dependents of the victims. Many of the colleges listed below are providing matching scholarships to students who received Dollars for Scholars® or Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund® education assistance.

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) has developed a List of Scholarship Funds Created for Victims of Terrorist Attack.The list will provide additional sources of personal and educational assistance for victims’ dependents.

Bethany Lutheran College
Bethany Lutheran College (BLC), is a private, residential, Christian, coeducational, liberal arts college founded in 1927 owned and operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Bethany College will provide $2,000 per student per year; maximum $8,000.

Carleton College
A private four-year liberal arts college, Carleton is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is located in Northfield, Minnesota. Carleton College will provide a matching Carleton Grant of up to $5,000 to students who receive educational assistance from the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.

The College of Wooster
Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and located in Wooster, Ohio, the College of Wooster is a private four-year liberal arts college focused on independent learning. The College of Wooster will match up to $10,000 in institutional scholarships and grants to students who receive educational assistance from the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.

Computer Analytics, Inc.
Location: Silver Spring, Maryland
Computer Analytics, Inc. (CAI) of will provide training services at a 30% discount to students paying own tuition and who are not receiving other scholarship funds. Free tuition may be available to students meeting unique guidelines.

Eckerd College
Located in St. Petersburg, Florida, Eckerd is a private liberal arts four-year college whose mission is to assist students to develop a disciplined intellect, trained imagination, and a motivation to lead. Eckerd College, will match up to $2,000 per year per full-time student who has received educational assistance from the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.

Emory College
Emory College is the four-year, undergraduate division of Emory University that offers an innovative, rigorous, liberal arts curriculum. The undergraduate program combines state-of-the-art university resources and a commitment to teaching undergraduate students. The college is known for academic excellence and progressive thinking that challenges students to do something with what they learn. Atlanta complements Emory’s learning environment with a setting rich in resources for enrichment, employment, and entertainment. The Cohen 911 Scholarship will provide financial aid assistance to the son or daughter of the victims of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.

Hampshire is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts. Hampshire College will provide a match of $2,000 per student.

Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and located in Jamestown, North Dakota, Jamestown is a private four-year liberal arts college. Jamestown College will match up to $500 per year per student who meets eligibility requirements for the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.

Lindenwood University
Located in St. Charles, Missouri, and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), Lindenwood is a four-year liberal arts college known nationally and internationally for innovation, entrepreneurship and extraordinary dedication to students. Lindenwood University will annually match scholarships received by recipients of the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are renewable up to four years provided the student maintains good academic standing with the University.

Providing a four-year liberal arts curriculum, Muskingum is located in New Concord, Ohio, and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Muskingum College will match scholarship support awarded to students through the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund up to $2,000 per year for a maximum of four years.

The University of Notre Dame, located in Notre Dame, Indiana, is a private four-year university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The University of Notre Dame is committed to meeting full financial need of students who are dependents of September 11 victims.

Pace University
Pace is a private four-year university located in New York, New York. Pace University established the Pace Remembers Scholarship to provide renewable full tuition scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students who are dependents of September 11 victims.

Pacific University
A private four-year university located in Forest Grove, Oregon, Pacific is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Pacific University will provide two matching scholarships per year – one undergraduate and one graduate – to recipients of the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund. The undergraduate scholarship will not exceed $9,000 per year; the graduate scholarship $2,500.

The University of Scranton
A comprehensive, co-educational institution, the University of Scranton is, by tradition, choice and heartfelt commitment, a Catholic and Jesuit university. The Michael S. Costello Memorial Scholarship will provide scholarship funds on an annual basis to undergraduate students registered with the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund. Average award is $3,000.

Suffolk University
Suffolk, a private four-year private university, is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Up to five scholarships for full-time undergraduate study will be provided by Suffolk University to dependents of September 11 victims.

Taylor University
A private four-year Christian, interdenominational liberal arts college, Taylor is located in Upland, Indiana. Taylor University will provide one scholarship to a dependent of a September 11 victim. The scholarship will be for 25% of tuition. Dependent must meet standard admissions criteria and demonstrate financial need.
